On Friday 22 November, our Joburg members proteste

On Friday 22 November, our Joburg members protested outside the Beyachad compound, which houses the SAZF HQ as well as other Zionist organisations. We recited Kaddish for all the lives lost during the current genocide and recited names of one hundred of the children who have been murdered.

We host these protests and prayers to signal to both the Jewish community and the wider world that Zionism is not Judaism and there is nothing antisemitic about fighting oppression, apartheid, and genocide, no matter who it is happening to and who is committing it. It is easy to despair after more than a year of genocide, funded and supported by world powers like the US, that there is nothing we can do. However, if our actions can move the needle even an inch, it is worth continuing to fight. Aluta Continua!

A question we often get asked is how we became suc

A question we often get asked is how we became such committed anti-Zionists. The dignity of the Palestinian people - and the love cultivated between Jewish anti-Zionists, Palestinians, and the Palestinian Solidarity Movement - drives us to persist, but it is the fact that this is done in our names that opened the door to activism for many of us.

The common question posed by Zionists - “What about the Holocaust?” - is baffling. The very parallels we see between the oppression of the Palestinians by Israel and the oppression of the Jews by Nazi Germany makes it impossible to stand idly by. The fight is so personal precisely because of the atrocities committed against our families and our education therein.

Cape Town comrades: Please join us this coming Friday (1st of November) at Masjidul Ghurbaah in Wynberg for our next Shabbos Against Genocide which will have a particular focus on Queer Palestinian voices 🏳‍🌈🇵🇸

After our Shabbos Service, there will be Maghrib prayers, three short speeches (by Tareq Baconi, Leigh-Ann Naidoo, and Imam Muhsin Hendricks), and then a communal vegetarian bring and share meal.

Though this has been in the works for a while, with the recent Tel Aviv bid to host the next ILGA conference, it is extra timely and urgent to centre queer Palestinians!

It can take time to internalise, but often an experience or piece of information leads everything to fall into place. Suddenly, fighting this system is no longer an option but a moral imperative.

The recent News24 article on King David alum and “elite sniper” Aaron Bayhack has raised the question of how a South African ends up participating in a genocide. This is how - Israeli exceptionalism is a fundamental aspect of the hasbara taught to Jewish children from the moment they enter a Zionist school. History is taught to frame Israel not just as a Jewish project but as a destiny promised by God. In this narrative, Israel can only ever be “the good guys” and anyone who is opposed to them is framed as an enemy of Judaism and the Jewish God.
